Edith Wharton visited Morocco in 1917 upon an official invitation from General Lyautey, resident general of French Morocco. Wharton spent three weeks traveling across what she called "a land of perpetual contradictions." Visiting Morocco, said Wharton, was "like turning the pages of some illuminated Persian manuscript all embroidered with bright shapes and subtle lines."
